Tim Penix – Served as a US Marine 1978-1985 (Terrain Analyst, Air Combat Intelligence, Counterintelligence), was honorably discharged in 1985 and moved to California. Worked a civilian job with Southern California Gas Company until Nov 1987. Civilian life was just not my thing. Joined the US Army 1987 and then retired from the military 2003. Enlisted in an Artillery unit and served as Forward Observer. In 1988 the Army asked if I would consider Officer Candidate School to which I excepted. Was branched in the Artillery, Medical Service Corp, and Quartermaster. Had many different positions while serving and served on served on several deployments. As an officer when you get moved into a slot for a specific unit, you have the option of going to a service school to become branched in that field. That said I served in the operations, logistics, administration, and ending with Medical Service fields.
After I retired, I became a Physical Education Teacher until the perfect VA position opened, interviewed for Health Coaching position, excepted and then a whole new world opened to me. I started working at the VA in 2011 and enjoyed the job I was performing. I first started teaching veterans and VA staff how to live healthier lives through exercise, good food choices and our mental health. Many things fascinated me about my job in the VA. Most of all was all the different veterans and their reason for coming to the VA for healthcare. It genuinely saddened me to know how our veterans were not receiving the benefits they earned. I became a subject matter expert on managing medical and mental health issues that plagued our vets. I was the primary author in writing the new model for helping veterans manage their challenges related to PTSD. I started focusing my time on helping the veterans with their benefits. Through the guidance from some fellow trusted VA staff, I learned how to assist vets and became very proficient with helping vets with their disability claims. One unique thing about how I was able to help the vets with their claims. Because I worked in Primary Medical Care, I knew most of the medical backgrounds of vets wanting to make a claim. I educated the vets on their specific medical and mental health challenges and helped them link their conditions to illnesses that they claim. Years of working at the VA and my exposure to vets helped with navigating the VA to better serve veterans that wanted assistance and guidance.
Lastly, above all else my time working at the VA helped me understand why helping veterans was my calling. You can say that helping our vets is in my DNA.
